Scott Williams, MD

Program Director, St. Vincent's Diagnostic Radiology

Welcome to the Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter School of Medicine Diagnostic Radiology Residency program at St. Vincent’s Medical Center!

We offer a radiology training program combining the benefits of an academic university with a community hospital/private practice. St. Vincent’s Medical Center is part of Hartford HealthCare, one of the largest healthcare systems in Connecticut. Our faculty are subspecialized and come from top residency and fellowship training programs. We pride ourselves in the wide range of cases we encounter and the critical role we play in cutting-edge medicine through interdisciplinary conferences, research, and involvement with national groups.

Our program has 12 residents and there are no radiology fellowships, so residents get first choice of cases and procedures. We provide a customized educational experience for every trainee, based on their background and future goals. Our graduates receive excellent fellowships and go on to train at the best institutions in the country. We seek residents driven by intellectual curiosity and a commitment to the pursuit of new knowledge.

Resident Experience

Radiology residents train at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a busy tertiary community teaching hospital serving a diverse patient population. Located along the Connecticut shoreline, Bridgeport offers residents exposure to a broad spectrum of pathology while living within easy reach of New Haven, Fairfield County, New York City and countless recreational opportunities throughout New England.

Throughout residency, trainees work closely with experienced radiologists, technologists, referring physicians, and interdisciplinary care teams. Residents develop expertise in all major subspecialties of diagnostic radiology. The supportive learning environment, combined with a strong commitment to resident education, wellness, and professional growth, prepares graduates for fellowship training and independent practice.

Residents begin their training with a strong foundation in diagnostic imaging, patient care, and clinical medicine. Junior residents complete essential clinical training experiences that provide a deeper understanding of patient management and the role of imaging in medical decision-making.

As radiology residents progress through their first two years, they rotate through core imaging services including:

  • Diagnostic Radiology

  • Emergency Radiology

  • Fluoroscopy

  • Ultrasound

  • Nuclear Medicine

  • Breast Imaging

  • Musculoskeletal Imaging

  • Neuroradiology

  • Cardiothoracic Imaging

  • Abdominal Imaging

  • Pediatric Radiology (R2 year)

  • Breast Imaging (R2 year)

Working in a high-volume community teaching hospital allows residents to gain confidence interpreting a wide variety of common and complex pathology while developing strong relationships with referring providers and faculty mentors.

Senior residents assume increasing responsibility and autonomy while refining their diagnostic skills across all radiology subspecialties. Senior residents play a vital role in teaching junior residents and medical students, leading multidisciplinary discussions, and preparing for the transition to independent practice.

Advanced rotations provide for concentrated experience in subspecialty imaging with electives tailored to individual career goals. Residents participate in tumor boards, quality improvement initiatives, scholarly activity, and educational conferences while building expertise in efficient workflow and consultative radiology.

Graduates leave the program well-prepared for fellowship training or direct entry into practice, having trained in a collaborative environment dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, and innovation.
