Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine Curriculum

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at St. Vincent's Medical Center provides comprehensive training designed to prepare residents for successful careers in diagnostic radiology, fellowship training, leadership roles and lifelong learning. Our curriculum combines high-volume clinical experience, dedicated education, faculty mentorship, multidisciplinary collaboration and progressive responsibility throughout residency.

Innovative and Resident-Centered Curriculum

Overview

Residents train in a busy community teaching hospital that performs more than 130,000 imaging examinations annually, providing extensive exposure to both common and complex pathology. Our curriculum incorporates the ACGME Core Competencies and Radiology Milestones while emphasizing the practical skills and clinical judgment required for independent practice.

Our curriculum is designed to provide broad training across all major radiology subspecialties while allowing residents the flexibility to explore individual interests and career goals. Residents participate in daily interpretation of radiographic, CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammographic, fluoroscopic, nuclear medicine, and interventional studies under the supervision of dedicated faculty.

The majority of residency training occurs at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Additional educational experiences include:

  • Pediatric Radiology at Connecticut Children's Hospital

  • American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) course

  • Multidisciplinary tumor boards and specialty conferences

  • Dedicated board preparation curriculum

  • Elective rotations tailored to career interests

Residents receive two hours of protected educational time daily for lectures, case conferences, board review, journal discussions, multidisciplinary conferences, and resident-led educational activities. Faculty lecturers are supplemented by guest faculty from leading academic institutions throughout the Northeast.

The first year training focuses on building a strong foundation in image interpretation, radiology workflow, procedural skills and emergency imaging.

Core Rotations

  • Emergency Radiology

  • Computed Tomography (CT)

  • Ultrasound

  • Neuroradiology

  • Fluoroscopy

  • Nuclear Medicine

  • Vascular & Interventional Radiology

Residents work closely with faculty while learning fundamentals of image interpretation and procedure performance. In accordance with ACGME guidelines, first-year radiology residents do not take independent overnight call.

The second radiology year expands exposure to advanced imaging modalities and introduces overnight responsibilities through the night-float system.

Core Rotations

  • Body MRI

  • Musculoskeletal Imaging

  • Neuroradiology

  • Advanced CT

  • Emergency Radiology

  • Breast Imaging

  • Pediatric Radiology

  • Ultrasound

  • Fluoroscopy

  • Nuclear Medicine

  • Vascular & Interventional Radiology

  • Night Float

Residents develop increasing independence, participate in image-guided procedures and gain experience managing after-hours imaging studies and emergency consultations.

The third year emphasizes advanced imaging interpretation, subspecialty expertise and focused preparation for the Core Examination.

Core Rotations

  • Body MRI

  • Neuroradiology MRI

  • Breast Imaging

  • Emergency Radiology

  • CT

  • Fluoroscopy

  • Nuclear Medicine

  • Vascular & Interventional Radiology

  • Night Float

  • AIRP

Senior residents assume greater responsibility in case interpretation, resident and medical student teaching, multidisciplinary conferences and procedural services while developing expertise across subspecialty imaging.

The final year is structured to facilitate the transition to independent practice or fellowship training.

Core Rotations

  • Advanced Emergency Radiology

  • Breast Imaging

  • Neuroradiology

  • CT

  • Ultrasound

  • Vascular & Interventional Radiology

  • Fluoroscopy

  • Nuclear Medicine

  • Night Float

  • Board Preparation

Senior Elective Time

Residents benefit from substantial elective opportunities that allow them to customize training based on fellowship interests and career goals.

Senior residents serve as mentors to junior trainees while refining efficiency, consultative skills, leadership abilities, and complex imaging interpretation.

Our program utilizes a night-float system that promotes resident education, patient safety, and wellness.

Night Float

  • Sunday through Friday, 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Evening Swing Shift

  • Monday through Friday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Weekend Coverage

  • Day Shift: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Saturday Night: 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Residents gain progressive responsibility throughout training while maintaining faculty support and supervision.

Residents participate in a robust conference curriculum that includes:

  • Daily didactic conferences

  • Case-based learning sessions

  • Board review conferences

  • Multidisciplinary tumor boards

  • Breast conferences

  • Neuroradiology conferences

  • OB/GYN imaging conferences

  • Quality improvement projects

  • Journal club

  • Resident case conference presentations

Guest faculty from institutions including Columbia, Yale, NYU, Montefiore/Albert Einstein, Mount Sinai and other academic centers contribute regularly to the educational experience.

Residents may tailor portions of their training to align with future fellowship plans and professional interests.

Potential electives include:

  • Neuroradiology

  • Body Imaging/Body MRI

  • Musculoskeletal Imaging/MSK MRI

  • Breast Imaging

  • Cardiac Imaging
